This book is a collection of British primary texts from the 18th century until the present time. Its main aim is to present undergraduates with extracts from a wide variety of texts in a cultural context. The authors have, for teaching purposes, divided the anthology into four parts: Revolutionaries and Romantics (1740-1837) Victorian Britain (1837-1901) Britain Before 1945 (1901-1945) Britain After 1945 (1945- ) To illustrate the diversity of cultural expression in Britain the book is organised into six main themes: Work, Class, Women, Democracy, Race, and Identity. It can thus be read and used thematically or chronologically.
