The essays in this volume are mostly devoted to literature and visual art of the Italian Renaissance, and its northern diffusion in England and Scandinavia. They concern chiefly various forms of relationship between literature and visual art, with theatre as a central form of mediation and a focus for the social relevance of the arts in early modern society.
